SpaceX seeks help from star chain users: appeal to the FCC and Congress to

on June 29, local time on Tuesday, the US space company SpaceX sent an email to the users of the satellite network of the satellite chain, calling on them to petition the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Congress to help them obtain the wireless band that is competing with dish network, so as to realize the efforts of the satellite chain to provide Internet services from space

this email reads in bold: "today, we ask for your support to end a lobbying campaign that may prevent the vast majority of American users from using the star chain service."

currently, SpaceX and dish are arguing over a series of radio frequencies called the 12 GHz band. SpaceX uses these frequencies to operate its huge satellite link network, which currently has more than 2400 satellites and has begun to provide broadband Internet access services to users on earth. At the same time, these frequency bands are also used by oneweb. Oneweb is building its own satellite broadband network

however, in January, 2021, the FCC announced that it would open more if frequencies to the outside world for 5g network construction. Dish and the company called RS access submitted a research report on how their networks use these frequencies. The two companies have also formed a so-called "12 GHz 5g alliance" with other company members to enable the FCC to change its rules and allow the 12 GHz band to be used for 5g

now, SpaceX is evaluating reports from companies such as dish. In a document submitted to the FCC last week, SpaceX said that it uses the 12 GHz band as the "main frequency" to provide "key downlink services" in the United States. SpaceX claims that if the frequency band is opened to 5g, its users will experience the nightmare of "complete service interruption 74% of the time". SpaceX shared these statistics in an email to star chain users and provided a link to a study it commissioned. The company said that the research proved how sharing the 12 GHz band would damage the service of the star chain

some wording in this email is similar to the press release sent by SpaceX to the media last week, and is linked to the Research Report of SpaceX and the letter submitted by the company to the FCC. However, SpaceX urges users to take action in emails sent to them. The email said: "the FCC and members of Congress have the right to stop this effort, but they need to listen to you. Although their claims were refuted by technical research as early as 2016, dish hired paid lobbyists who tried to mislead the FCC with wrong analysis to cover up the truth."

spacex provides a link. Users of the star chain can click and enter the browser page, and can directly send e-mail to the FCC. SpaceX wrote: "please enter your name, e-mail and address in the form below to petition the FCC and members of Congress to end this threat. Before clicking 'send message', please provide a personal statement in the text box above each message on how access to the star chain has affected your life. Your personal experience will force members of Congress and the FCC to act on your behalf."

users can choose to send pre written emails to U.S. senators and representatives and the FCC. "I am writing to express my strong opposition to the FCC's plan to change the rules of the 12 GHz frequency band. The FCC should reject efforts to reuse and change the rules related to this frequency band, because this frequency band is used by satellite operators to provide high-speed broadband and other services in my community and throughout the country."

dish has relied on 12 GHz to provide many satellite TV services. As one of the largest holders of this frequency band, the company hopes to also start using it for 5g services. Jeff Blum, executive vice president of dish legal affairs, said last year: "we believe that coexistence is possible." He called this potential change "a win-win situation for everyone". Dish did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the SpaceX email The

12 GHz band is particularly important for dish because it is building a 5g wireless network, currently called Project Genesis. As part of T-Mobile's acquisition of sprint, dish acquired Boost Mobile and reached an agreement with regulators to launch a nationwide wireless network. The first phase of the network was launched across the United States this month. Dish claims to cover more than 20% of the U.S. population

this is just the latest regulatory dispute on 5g spectrum sharing. Earlier this year, US operators at&t and Verizon also had a dispute with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over the possible interference of some frequencies used around the airport with the altimeter. Previously, the FCC approved the spectrum for mobile network use. (small)
